New CompTIA Security plus SY0-601

The new Security+ SY0-601 will be available by the end of 2020

The current Security plus exam SY0-501 was released on October 4 of 2017. CompTIA being on a three-year renewal schedule for all its major certifications (and Security+ absolutely falls in that category), so 2020 is the year for the new exam update. This means the new CompTIA Security plus SY0-601 will be released in quarter 4 of 2020.

Did you know CompTIA is certified too?

The reason the release won’t be significantly delayed is that just as CompTIA has you getting certified and controls the Security+ certification process (among others), CompTIA itself is also under the thumb of a certification requirement. You may not know this but years ago CompTIA applied for and got approved for the International Standards Organization – ISO 9001 quality certification. It’s great to know that the people that control your certification process is itself certified! Especially quality certified. The ISO 9001 verifies that CompTIA has in place the processes and procedures that certifies they produce the highest quality certifications.

Why should CompTIA being certified matter to you?

Well, two reasons: 1) as mentioned above its great in general for the credibility and quality of your certification, but also 2) it puts an outer time limit as to when we can expect a new exam version to come out. You see, part of CompTIA retaining (as in not losing…) their ISO 9001 certification status is to apply the three-year limit on any version of their certification exams. So, there you have it, anything later significantly than October 2020 for the new Security+ SY0-601 exam version is therefore very unlikely.

Performance Based Question for Security+ SY0-401 Practice Test
Example of Performance Based Question for Security+

The last new CompTIA exam versions releases were Network+ N10-007 and the A+ 220-1001 and 220-1002. For both exams, the CertBlaster exam simulator suites were the first ones offered on the market (not bragging over here but it is a fact that we beat every other vendor to market on those two). We plan on doing the same for the new Security+ SY0-601 practice test and exam simulator suites. So that means we should release that CertBlaster for the new Security+ SY0-601 on or about October 2020.

How about Security+ SY0-501?

In the meantime, if you are looking for Security+ practice tests just click on the button below. You may wonder if it’s smart to take Security+ SY0-501 when it is on its way out? Well, it turns out you are not wasting anything because when the new version comes out and the SY0-501 is retired it does not make the SY0-501 invalid at all. Whatever CompTIA exam you take, you will be gainfully certified for three years from your exam date, and this regardless of when the exam is retired. This means that even if you were to pass the current Security+ SY0-501 say in February of 2021, that credential will remain valid till 2024 even if the new SY0-601 is released by the end of 2017.

Grace period?

Why would you be able to take SY0-501 in February of  2021 when the new CompTIA Security plus SY0-601 will be out in 2020? That’s because CompTIA always provides a 6 months “grace period” or transition period between the retirement of the old one and the introduction of the new one. That period will likely start in October or November and so last until March or April of 2021. During that period you will be able to pick and choose which exam you prefer (hopefully based on the exam objectives) and take either and be just as certified for three years regardless of which one you pick.
