>> About Proctor Server

Selecting a machine act as the Proctor Server.

Proctor Server is a virtual server and there no special requirements regarding any particular operating system or need of any installed extra software. Proctor Server will function in any supported Windows OS provided the drive that contains the CertBlaster installation can be administratively shared with the client. Typically the machine used by the instructor is reserved for this purpose.
Each CertBlaster product requires a separate Proctor Server registration in order to operate. For example, registering A+ Core Hardware for Proctor Server will not automatically register this same functionality on the A+ Operating System.

NOTE. The exam must be registered and functional prior to registering Proctor Server.

For additional voucher registration information Click Here.

Configuring the Master Machine.

After registering your exam the File-Register Proctor Server menu option should be enabled. If not, close and restart CertBlaster. Click the Register Proctor Server menu selection to start another instance of the online Registration Wizard for Proctor Server. Use the special voucher provided for this purpose. Upon completion you should see a successful notification message that displays the number of concurrent "seats" the software has been configured to allow. Now follow the step-by-step configuration instructions listed below.

Once Proctor Server bas been successfully registered you must share the drive containing the CertBlaster installation. This process may vary depending upon your operating system. Clicking the My Computer icon and right-clicking the drive and choosing Properties will open a window similar to the picture shown below.

If you don't see the "Sharing" tab you may need to install Microsoft File and Print Sharing.

Enter a name for the share and check "Full" for access type.

You must fully share the drive and not just the folder or CertBlaster will not be able to resolve the correct path back to this machine.

  • From the Start menu, select Programs--CertBlaster---Start CertBlaster.
  • From the List of Installed Exams window, double-click the exam name.
  • From the Options menu, click Administration.

You should now see the Proctor Server Control Panel tabbed dialog. Click the Master tab.

Check the Synchronize Tests box and use the browse button to proctor any one of the listed exams or drills. In Study Mode you can preset the number of questions to include and any time limits as desired. In Assessment or Certification mode any changes to the default values will be ignored by design as these modes are meant to simulate the actual exam. Each "client" machine connected to the proctoring session will, by default, receive an identical exam, content wise. The Randomize Questions checkbox will, if checked, randomize the order in which the questions are presented to each individual client. NOTE, The content remains identical, only the order as presented is varied client by client.

Upon initial use of Proctor Server on a new master machine you must click the Start Test button and let the exam run for a few seconds. The button caption will change to Stop Test and 2 new files, master.dll and cbtools.dll will be created in the CertBlaster root directory. These files are required and must be present in order to allow a client machine to locate and successfully connect to the master.

Configuring the Client Machine(s).

Install and start CertBlaster.
The exams DO NOT have to be registered on the client machines.

From the List of Installed Exams click Options--Administration to display the Proctor Server tabbed dialog.

Check the "Turn on Administrative Controls" box and set the UNC path to the Certblaster directory on the master. You can also optionally map a network drive and set the path using the browse button.
Click Apply and you should be prompted to restart CertBlaster and apply the changes.
When CertBlaster opens you should see a plain white screen with the message "Waiting for Authorization..." displayed in the status bar at the bottom.

If you see the message "CertBlaster is configured for proctoring but is unable to locate the master machine." go back through the configuration instructions above to verify and/or validate all your settings.

Test the Read permissions by opening the client web browser and copying the same path into the address bar and pressing the Enter key. If the browser fails to locate the shared drive or  otherwise display's an error message, then the path may contain syntax errors and needs to be corrected.

Test the Write functionality by opening Notepad and adding a line of any text. Try saving this file to the share using the same path. If this fails then your share Read\Write permissions may need adjusting.

If the path and permissions both appear to be correct based on the checks above, then open Windows Explorer on the master machine and check the CertBlaster root directory for the existence of the 2 previously mentioned required files, (master.dll and cbtools.dll). If they are not there start a proctored exam and CertBlaster will automatically create them. After verifying that they are now both present, return to the client machine and try connecting again.

Many connection issues that are encountered here can often be difficult to troubleshoot. In a classroom environment, specificly those that involve frequent re-formatting of the hard drive and/or reinstallation of the operating system, duplicated machine names can often become a problem for Proctor Server. For example, if the master machine's network name is "Instructor" there cannot be another machine using that same name located anywhere else on the network. Likewise, individual client machine's cannot all be named "Student" or test results will end up being overwritten and appear missing on the master. LAN configuration problems of this type can and will cause various run-time errors and other erratic behaviors and reasons can also be mis-reported by the Operating System which only adds to the confusion.

>> Download CertBlaster® software, executable files. Until the exam is registered either manually or with a voucher you will only have access to the first 10 questions of Exam 1. Purchase information may be obtained by contacting sales@dtipublishing.com (most files are about 4 MB):
